Rick Whitecotton has been a proud resident of Sandwich for over 40 years. He and his wife, Azucena, have shared 25 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they have built a beautiful, blended family with five grown children, all of whom attended Sandwich schools, and twelve grandchildren. Two of Rick’s sons serve their community as members of the Sandwich Police and Fire Departments, respectively. For more than four decades, Rick has successfully managed his family business, providing jobs to many local residents.
Rick’s dedication to public service runs deep. He served on the Sandwich Fire Department as a firefighter, Captain, and Assistant Chief, and also contributed as a Trustee for the Sandwich Fire Protection District. Currently, Rick continues his commitment to the community by serving as a Fourth Ward Alderman on the Sandwich City Council.
Rick’s life has always revolved around being a first responder, whether for his family or his community. His passion for service defines him, and he understands the importance of stepping up to answer the call.
In his own words:
"I’m running for Mayor because I believe our community has lost its voice in city government. Sandwich is a unique small town—it's a great place to live and raise a family because of its people, not because of the city administration.
Residents deserve access to information and clear communication from their leaders. When you reach out to the mayor, city administrator, or your alderperson, you should hear back the same day. If they can’t provide an answer immediately, they should at least acknowledge your concerns and commit to investigating and responding. Right now, that responsiveness is lacking. Any elected official who fails to do so is not fulfilling their duty. We are here to serve you, not the other way around.
As Mayor, I would immediately initiate bi-monthly town-hall meetings with the mayor and city administrator at times convenient for the community. This would create an important opportunity to hear what matters most to the residents, many of whom currently feel left out.
While we’ve made strides in improving roads, sidewalks, and infrastructure, we must also focus on fostering a truly business-friendly environment, supporting our current businesses while attracting new ones. By fostering transparent, open collaboration between residents, businesses, and the city government, we can continue to improve ‘Our Community.’
Each of us has a role in making Sandwich the best it can be, and I’m asking you to answer that call too. It would be an honor to serve as your Mayor and lead us toward a better future."
